Diversity Statement
Throughout my tenure in higher education, I recognize the significance of educators and mentors who foster an inclusive atmosphere, ensuring all students can access the tools essential for success in their chosen fields. By creating an equitable environment that promotes respect and communication across gender, racial, and cultural communities, I've not only enriched the student experience but also cultivated a collaborative studio setting for my students.
In my current role at Olivet College as an Instructor of Art and Director of Visual Art Talent, I've taken proactive leadership in nurturing diversity. This involves initiatives to raise awareness about gender and racial bias, as well as fostering the next generation of artists through outreach activities. I've provided resources, such as professional development discussions and exhibitions, for underrepresented artists in our region.
In my efforts to promote diversity, I've encouraged undergraduate students from underrepresented groups to apply for artist residencies and fellowships that align with their interests. Similarly, I advocate for minority students to seek out competitive residencies, awards, and grants to advance their careers as emerging contemporary artists. My roles as an Instructor and Advisor have also presented numerous opportunities to inspire students to pursue creative arts studies. Through these opportunities, I consistently champion a diverse student environment that contributes to a cross-cultural, collaborative, and innovative atmosphere.
